Inertial migration of neutrally buoyant particles in a square duct: An investigation of multiple equilibrium positions

چکیده
Inertial migration of neutrally buoyant particles in a square duct has been investigated by numerical simulation in the range of Reynolds numbers from 100 to 1000. Particles migrate to one of a small number of equilibrium positions in the cross-sectional plane, located near a corner or at the center of an edge. In dilute suspensions, trains of particles are formed along the axis of the flow, near the planar equilibrium positions of single particles. At high Reynolds numbers Re 750 , we observe particles in an inner region near the center of the duct. We present numerical evidence that closely spaced pairs of particles can migrate to the center at high Reynolds number. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2176587

Lateral and cross-lateral focusing of spherical particles in a square microchannel.
The inertial migration of particles in micro-scale flows has received much attention due to its promising applications, such as the membrane-free passive separation of particles or cells. The particles suspended in rectangular channels are known to be focused near the center of each channel face as the channel Reynolds number (R(C)) increases due to the lift force balance and the hydrodynamic i...
متن کاملThe lateral migration of neutrally-buoyant spheres transported through square microchannels
The lateral migration of neutrally-buoyant particles transported through square microchannels has been experimentally investigated over a Reynolds number range of 0.06 Re 58.65 at the ratio of channel hydraulic diameter to particle size, λ ≈ 14. Flow Reynolds numbers are determined by applying a conventional particle-tracking algorithm to small tracer particles, while novel imaging techniques h...

A neutrally buoyant particle in pipe flow is known to undergo a radial migration for finite Reynolds number flows. This effect was first observed by Segré and Silberberg (1962), who noted a radial equilibrium position at a radius r = 0.6R in a pipe of radius R, in conditions of finite but low Re. These results have been extended to show that the equilibrium position of the particles is moved to...
متن کاملDirect Simulation of the Motion of Solid Particles in Couette and Poiseuille Flows of Viscoelastic Fluids
This paper reports the results of direct numerical simulation of the motion of a two-dimensional circular cylinder in Couette flow and in Poiseuille flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid. Both neutrally buoyant and nonneutrally buoyant cylinders are considered. The cylinder's motion and the mechanisms which cause the cylinders to migrate are studied. The stable equilibrium position of neutrally buoyant pa...

Inertial microfluidics-based devices have recently attracted much interest and attention due to their simple structure, high throughput, fast processing and low cost. They have been utilised in a wide range of applications in microtechnology, especially for sorting and separating microparticles. This novel class of microfluidics-based devices works based on intrinsic forces, which cause micropa...
